  The Midsummer technology uses 6" STAINLESS STEEL substrates to produce solar cells that look like mono crystalline Silicon cells. The Midsummer cells have all the benefits of CIGS but without being limited to large glass panels. The cells can be used as replacement for Silicon cells in conventional modules, or they can be used in new innovative FLEXIBLE applications.
 
Midsummer AB is a Swedish privately owned company founded in 2004. Midsummer has developed a distinctive technology to manufacture “Flexible CIFS Solar Cells on the Stainless Steel” through sputtering process. This manufacturing line has the smallest footprint (1MW footprint is 48m2) and can be start with 2.5MW capacity. Manufacturing line doesn’t require any clean room to manufacture CIGS Solar Cells. Midsummer’s CIGS process is all developed in house. The DUO sputtering tool is designed and manufactured by Midsummer. We guarantee the performance of both process and hardware. With our concept of using the same tool for R&D as for production, our customers can directly transfer the latest process improvements and cost saving measures to ensure a future proof investment. Midsummer combines advanced CIGS research with experience from industrial mass manufacturing to provide cost effective turnkey solar cell production solutions.   Technological and R&D Milestone:
 

The Midsummer DUO is a compact, fully automatic deposition tool for CIGS solar cell manufacturing. It’s designed for high throughput, operational stability, optimized layer uniformity and superior material utilization. The DUO tool deposits the complete material stack in an unbroken vacuum chain. All materials are deposited by sputtering onto stainless steel substrates. Midsummer uses a Cadmium free process. All substrates are processed as individual cells, eliminating the need for scribing while giving a higher yield. The DUO has a small footprint and less need for stringent clean room conditions.

Small vacuum chambers also enable fast target change time. Midsummer uses the same equipment and the same substrate size in production as in R&D. Improvements in R&D are directly transferable to production. Bar coded substrates ensures that all processing data for each cell is recorded for QC and for product development.

  CIGS Manufacturing
  The DUO tool is a self-contained manufacturing cell. To increase capacity we add an array of identical DUO tools in parallel. Midsummer combines DUO tools with standard ultrasonic substrate washing equipment, screen printers, ovens and testers to provide scalable turnkey manufacturing solutions,starting from as low as 5 MW. We team up with partner module equipment companies to offer matching back end solutions. At our R&D centre in Stockholm we test and evaluate material and manufacturing methods as well as module performance to ensure our customers have short time to market with a tested and proven product. Midsummer’s customers have access to process upgrades and direct contact with material suppliers for our proprietary process to ensure a continued competitive operating cost.
